Beginning of D-day
D-Day was an event that happened in World War II and was a major event in History because it changed the way people saw the world. D-day began in the summer of 1944, between the Allied nations and German forces occupying Western Europe. The invasion was planned on June 5th 1944. However, such action never realized due to fact of the weather. In June 6th 1944, more than 7,500 missions were transported across English Channel. The Germans, Canadians, the U.S.A, and the Britsh fought in D-Day. In a war there are many code names used with a particular meaning. In this battle, the famous code name was Operation overlord. The military used it to describe the movement of the ships, planes, supplies, and equipment through the English Channel.
Weapons and troops
In D-Day the British, Canadians, Americans, and the Germans fought in the war. There were 60,000 people who fought on the British and 2,700 were killed. In the United States there were 6,603 who fought in the war and 1,465 were killed. In Canada there were 946 people who fought in the war and 500 were killed. In Germany the number of people who who fought in the war were unknown but 4,000 were killed. In D-Day the troops used alot of weapons. They used M1, Garand Rifles, Thompson sub-machine guns, "Grease" guns (an American sub-machine gun), Springfield.30 (a sniper rifle), Browning Automatic Rifle (B.A.R.), and Sten gun (British sub-machine gun).
The importance
D-Day was important because it was the first American Assault into Europe and there was about 9,000 people still alive after the invasion was over. Another reason is because a lot of people sacrificed there lives to help save there country. Without this invasion, it would have been very hard for the Allies to destroy Hitlers regime. This is a turning point in history because it began the liberation of France and it signalled the end of the Nazi domination of Western Europe. It also made sure that the Germans now had to fight against both the British and US in the West and in Italy as well as the Russians in the East.
The end of D-DAy
D-Day ended in May, 1945. Hitler was forced to fight a two-front war against the Russians on the East and the Americans, British, Canadians, and French on the West. Within a year, Hitler committed suicide, and the war was over. It ended in a success for the allies who took over all five beaches and eventually liberated France. It left the Germany in flames with their communities laying in piles of debris and rubble.
