Beginning to end
In July 17,1942 marks the begginning of Battle of Stalingrad. This battle was fought between the Russians (Soviet Union) and Germans (Nazi Germany). The primary task was to secure the oil fields in Caucasus and take control of Stalingrad. The leader of the the Germans was Paulus, Paulus was orderered by Hitler to take on Stalingrad since it was land not ruled by Hilter yet. Hitlers main goal was to capture Stalingrad because it would secure the left flank of the Germans army as they advanced in the oil-rich industry. Also, Hilter wanted to stop oil from going to the Soviet Union, which was the key to war. To try to win this battle Hilter sent 2 million of his men to fight, which was 2/3 of his army. Hilter wanted to expand his power and take over Soviet Union. In the first day of this battle, 25,000 russians died but yet the soviets leader, Zhukov, refused to evacuate the city. Many innocent people in the city would have to be lucky to find shelter in a basement with food and water. Since the Germans were only ready for summer and the Russians were not surrendering, winter hits and the Germans begin to run out of food and become very weak. After months in the winter, Hilter also refused to let the Germans give up. Germans begin writing letters to there families saying good-bye because all the Germans begin to die. After many months of the bloodest battle ever fought, it finally comes to an end. On Febuary 2nd of 1943, Paulus surrenders. Stalingrad stays owned to the soviet union.
